There is growing interest in Korean Medicine both within and outside of the country. Within this trend, the number of Korean Medicine institutions has increased domestically, while Korean Medicine has been spotlighted as an alternative or third medicine to contemporary medicine internationally. Theories of Korean Medicine are accumulations of clinical findings and a philosophical system built throughout many years. Therefore, for proper understanding of these theories, researches on past theories of Korean Medicine and establishing contents of these theories is needed. As such, primary research into these theories presented as different schools of thought is crucial. Next, for proper understanding of these schools of thought, the social and cultural background against which each school was established need to be examined. Recently in the field of history, especially in the field of cultural history, interest towards science history and microhistory in which mundane lives of individuals are studied has been increasing. Naturally, history on disease and medicine have also become a topic of interest. Such efforts examine the society and its individuals that have lived through time by looking at disease and treatment within the context of individual and society. Despite such efforts, due to the lack of means for history scholars to study Korean Medicine, there is limited understanding of ancient and middle ages that actually is the time period for most research subjects.

To resolve these problems, mutual cooperation between Korean Medicine and History is crucial. Research topics of focus are as following.

First, a chronological analysis of theories of Korean Medicine. Through thorough study of past medical theories, an examination of the process through which theories of today have been formed is required.

Second, a study on the development of Korean Medicine that is different from Chinese Medicine. This entails an academic examination for the establishment of Korean Medicine that is represented in the Donguibogam, and its particular characteristics.

Third, an examination into historical facts related to medicine. Medical policies of China and Korea, historical and social realities that contributed to the establishment of Korean Medicine, changes in Korean Medicine that took place amidst socio-cultural changes are topics that we will look into.

Fourth, an evaluation of individuals and the state within the historical context surrounding medicine and medical practice. Research paving ways for new perspectives towards society and state that has changed its ways of governing the individual according to changes in the state's interest to which social pathological phenomenon expanded from individual disease, is necessary.
